Honeybees Snowed In!

Russian Breeding Yard

The first blizzard of the season struck his weekend. Over 2 feet fell on our property.  Ed spent many hours digging us out of our house and driveway.

I received an email from a local hobbyist who  said his hives were completely covered by snow. He asked how long they can stay covered before they suffocate. I told him they only need the upper entrance in the inner cover to fly out on a sunny day.

But his  question tells me we have to take a look at our own colonies as soon as possible. Now that our driveway and cars are free, we will make a point of checking our colonies tomorrow. We will assess the damages, make needed repairs, and count losses.
